On the Classical Front
“Arnold does emerge as an extremely thoughtful composer and talented player of rather austere sketches in the vein of Schoenberg and Webern—not the usual turf for jazz electric guitarists...he holds the spotlight particularly well alone when he plays like a European in love with the serial music of the 1920s.”
 —Norman Weinstein, Boston Phoenix

The four variations which appear on Bruce's CD Blue Eleven will be recorded as “Variations for Orchestra” in October of 1996 with the Warsaw Philharmonic. This recording will be released on the MMC label in 1997.

The “Variations” are in 4 movements. Each movement explores 12-tone composition from a slightly different angle. "Variation 1" and “Variation 4” come from a traditional direction, i.e. Schoenberg. “Variation 2” and “Variation 3” use a much looser interpretation of 12-tone theory.
In the setting of Blue Eleven, you will find each variation first played as a solo classical piece and then followed by a jazz trio interpretation of the same piece. The mixture of jazz improvisation, 20th century classical composition, as well as blues and rock influences make this recording quite unique.Below is an excerpt of “Variation 3” or “Variation 4” for classical guitar.
The tracks are provided here as Shockwave audio files.
