| A wide range of courses are offered at the NYU Summer Guitar Intensive. You can attend as many of the courses listed below as you want but you must have the text for the course in order to participate. You can take these courses for credit or non-credit. Modal Theory and Application Instructor: Pete McCann 3 points, 30 hours July 17-August 3: M T W Th 10-12pm Course covers all common scales used in improvisation with an emphasis on developing your own original style along with practical application. Required book: New York Guitar Method Volume One 40.00 USD See Book List Page for more information. Topics to be discussed include: Chord Scale Relationships Scales relationships based on aural comprehension Modal Sequencing Articulation Chord and Melodic Re-harmonization using Scales Fingering Pattern considerations It is highly recommended that you get the books for these courses prior to attending the Summer Intensive. After receiving the books please contact Bruce for assignments to prepare yourself for the course. Improvising Counterpoint on Guitar (with Study of Polymeter and Motivic Transformation) Instructor: Dusan Bogdanovic 3 points, 30 hours July 17-August 3: M T W Th 3-5pm This course will involve various aspects of improvising counterpoint on guitar starting with Renaissance species studies and Fantasia form through contemporary idioms. A special focus will be on polymeter and asymmetrical meter derived from Balkan and African music as well as modal and polymodal harmonic languages. To make things still more challenging and comprehensive, I will also introduce process of motivic transformation in composition and improvisation. Required book: The required reading will be my book Ex Ovo (A Guide for the Perplexed Composers and Improvisers) (DO534) published by Doberman-Yppan, Canada. Optional reading will be my Polyrhythmic and Polymetric Studies for Guitar (EB3320) published by Berben, Italy. Approach Note Theory and Application Instructor: Bruce Arnold 3 points, 30 hours July 17-August 3: M T W Th 10-12pm Course covers usage of Approach Note figures in various styles of Jazz and Contemporary Music with an emphasis on developing your own original style along with practical application. Ear Training concepts are also included in this course. Set Theory for Improvisation Instructor: Bruce Arnold 3 points, 30 hours July 17-August 3: M T W Th 3-5pm Course Covers usage of various Pitch Class set combinations for soloing, comping or composition. Many guests from the above faculty list will join in on various days to play and participate in the class. Pitch Class Set theory will cover: Integer Notation Prime Sets Composition, Improvisation and Chordal use of the following Pitch Class Set Types: DiTonic Tritonic TetraTonic Pentatonic Hexatonic Heptatonic Octatonic Nonatonic Decatonic Hendecontonic Dodecatonic Harmonic and Melodic Superimposition Bi Tonal Pendulums It is highly recommended that you get the books for these courses prior to attending the Summer Intensive. Rhythmic Training for Instrumentalist Instructor: Tony Moreno 3 points, 30 hours July 17-August 3: M T W Th 10-12pm The classes will present a variety of rhythmic studies to develop the student's overall sense of time as both soloist and accompanist. Meter studies (both fixed and moving), metric modulation, clave/ostinato studies, tempo changes, note groupings and rhythmic subdivisions are among the topics for study. How these ideas relate to harmony and melodic construction will be discussed, as well as: the function of the rhythm section; how musicians can study these ideas together in a group setting; and how these applications may be applied to composition and improvisation.
