Bruce Arnold’s Jazz and Guitar Workshop

SCALES
This scale section will first cover the 22 most used scales in improvisation. Be sure to first check out the Scales Intro document, this will give you information on Physical Technique, Theoretical Knowledge, Aural Recognition and Musical Application. Memorizing scales is more than just memorizing a fingering pattern. There are many factors that will make the difference between learning a pattern and apply a scale musically. Therefore I would also recommend the Music Theory Workbook for Guitar Volume Two

CHORDS
This chord section will first cover the basic moveable chords forms you need to know to play any music. As with all chords you need to apply them to chord progression to remember them and learn how they are used in real music. To apply these chords and others to chord progressions I would recommend Chord Workbook for Guitar Volume One .

THEORY
This section helps a student to learn the basics of music theory and then apply this knowledge to exercises. Background information includes the basic music theory of reading music, scale and interval construction, the building of triads and 7th chords, diatonic triads and 7th chords, and tensions. All exercises are geared to the guitar, but any instrumentalist will be able to use this information to learn music theory. The basic music theory pages 1 through 15 come from my Music Theory Workbook for Guitar Volume 1. Each page has a brief description of its contents and it is crucial to read these pages before attempting the theory exercises. Learning music Theory is like learning a foreign language. You need to work over and over with the notes and their locations on the guitar before you will retain this information. The files found here will help you get started and show you a proven method for reaching the goal of applying music theory directly to the guitar. To complete this process I recommend Music Theory Workbook for Guitar Volume One

FURTHER INVESTIGATIONS
This Further Investigations will cover more advanced concepts on improvisation and other information that I feel will help to raise your musicianship. It is highly recommended that you check out the book list. Contained within these books is the information that many of the great improvisors and composers have used to educate themselves. Although some of these books will take you years to fully understand the knowledge contained is well worth the study.
